What Is Appel?

4. Dealing: The dealer shuffles the deck and deals a set number of cards to each player, typically 7 cards for a 4-player game. The remaining deck forms the draw pile.

5. Gameplay Rounds: The game consists of multiple rounds, each divided into turns. During a turn, players strategically play a card from their hand, aiming to match the rank of the card played by the previous player or execute specific actions based on the card's rank.

6. Special Cards and Actions:

   • Aces (1s): Skip the next player's turn.
   • 2s: Reverse the direction of play.
   • 8s: The next player must play a card of the same suit or draw two cards.
   • 10s: Clear the discard pile, starting a new round.
   • Jacks (Js): The player who plays a Jack can choose any player to take an extra turn.

7. Drawing Cards: If a player cannot or chooses not to play a card on their turn, they must draw a card from the draw pile.

8. Scoring: Points are scored based on the cards played during the round. Face cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10 points each, Aces are worth 15 points, and numbered cards retain their face value. The first player to reach the predetermined point total wins the game.

9. Winning the Game: The player who reaches the agreed-upon point total first is declared the winner. In case of a tie, additional rounds may be played to determine the ultimate winner.

10. House Rules: Appel is flexible, and players can introduce house rules to add more excitement or tailor the game to their preferences. Experiment with variations, but ensure all players agree on the rules before starting.
